WHAT ARE INLAYS AND ONLAYS?

Inlays and onlays are high strength partial coverage ceramic / porcelain or metal restorations, that are made in the dental laboratory and bonded over the prepared tooth surface to restore its form, function and aesthetics. It is a technique sensitive procedure with the ideal need for comprehensive understanding of ceramic / metal material science, adhesive bonding techniques and advanced tooth preparation designs.

Unfortunately, with the use of weaker materials, such as composite fillings in heavily broken down, root canal treated and cracked teeth, its gradual degradation will lead to more frequent failures and the need for replacements. This ultimately results in repeated tooth structure removal that further weakens the tooth and threatens the vitality of the nerve (pulp) of the tooth, and can lead to its unrestorability and resultant tooth loss.

Though, in some of these teeth, the prescription of a full coverage dental crown is also not appropriate as considered to be too invasive with unnecessary removal of tooth structure, which can carry adverse effects.
